D Minus Two (2 days before I start the trail)
I took the ferry from Tsawwassen in Vancouver to Duke Point in Nanaimo. Once landed, I took the bus to the Super 8 Motel located in Victoria.
I was happy to have a place to relax but my air conditioner didn’t work and I was on the top floor… it was hot. I was about to hike one of the toughest trails in Canada though so I shouldn’t start complaining now. This day would be mainly spent going over my gear for a final time.
I also had to build a new alcohol stove for cooking (previous one got damaged in my flight from YYZ to YVR). No need to worry though, I wanted to try a new design. I purchased a Fancy Feast cat food can, regular tuna can and hole puncher. Removed the contents from the two cans, cleaned them, punched holes in the top rim of the Fancy Feast can and VOILA! – a new alcohol stove. I would use the larger can to snuff out the flame from the Fancy Feast can and put any remaining alcohol back with the rest of my fuel for future cooking. If you aren’t aware of DIY alcohol stoves, look ‘em up.
